Laminated Products
We have been involved in laminated timber since 2006.
This material is increasingly used due to its greater stability, lack of defects and size flexibility.
These products are all clear, defect free, typically in European Redwood or Oak (both European and American White Oak), though a whole range of other species are available if required. These include Ash, Beech, Dark Red Meranti, Hemlock, Larch, and Maple.
Our Redwood and Oak is always FSC® or PEFC certified.
Our principal suppliers are based in Germany, Poland and Estonia and all deliveries are by truck door-to-door, allowing minimum handling and shortest delivery time.
Redwood is usually finger jointed every layer in 6.0m lengths, but is also available with solid outer layers, without finger joints, in shorter lengths to suit window and door manufacture.
Laminated Oak is almost always in 'solid outer layer' construction, without finger joints.
European Oak is typically used for window and door components because of its greater durability, while American White Oak is usually used for stair components, offering longer lengths without finger joints, in an application where durability isn’t required.
Recent innovations in laminated timber offer the inclusion of inner layers of foam-like material such as purenit®. This improves the insulating properties of the laminated section and, along with double or triple glazing, helps to reduce overall U values in windows and doors, in line with the latest building regulation requirements.
It is also possible to incorporate metal layers within the laminated scantlings giving increased security.
Laminated window frames from timber manufactured by one of our suppliers was used at the Scottish Parliament Building in Edinburgh. This material incorporated an inner layer of high density plywood or 'tank wood' making the frames resistant to both bullets and bomb attack!
